KONTRONIK HELI JIVE Statement

Running the HELI JIVE in mode 8 (external governor) together with the current version of Mikado VBAR may cause problems in certain constellations. Currently, KONTRONIK as well as Mikado are working on a solution for this issue.

All other modes such as mode 4 (governor) and all other implemented features like autorotation bail out can be used with no problems.

Differences POWERJIVE vs. HELI JIVE

The KONTRONIK HELI JIVE has been optimized for model helicopters. Other
applications are generally possible but not recommended. For standard applications
the standard JIVE/POWERJIVE ESC is recommended.

Due to new features of the HELI JIVE some former features had to skipped or
adjusted (e.g. mode programming). Also, a third virtual PROGCARD III had to
implemented on the PROGDISC to adjust new parameters. In contrast, HELI JIVEs
do not support PROGCARD I any longer.

Some standard parameters, which had been loaded during mode programming have
been modified for helicopter models. Also, the HELI JIVE is no longer supporting
NiCd and NiMH battery packs.

A completely new feature is the autorotation. This allows pilots to restart the rotor
after an autorotation with a shorter spool up time.

The HELI JIVE is characterized by a small but crucial internal hard ware change. This
makes a software update from POWERJIVE to HELI JIVE impossible. To use all
features of the HELI JIVE a PROGDISC is necessary.

Available modes for HELI JIVE
1. Reset/APM
This mode generally coincides with the former APM mode with individual
parameters being optimized for helicopter pilots. If this mode is selected all
parameters of the HELI JIVE are being reset to factory settings.
2. Motor (Gas mode)
This mode is characterized by fixed-throttle operation over the complete speed
but with longer spool up times that in fixed wing flying.
3. Combination
The new combination mode 3 is characterized by mixed operation. Via virtual
PROGCARD III settings a percentage of throttle way can be set. Until this
percentage (X%) the HELI JIVE operates with fixed-throttle control (gas mode).
From X% to X% + 16% the fixed-throttle control merges into governor. From
throttle position X% + 16% the HELI JIVE operates completely in governor mode.
In this mode, like in former mode 11 the ESC is learning a fixed RPM. The
necessary calibration happens as soon as the throttle reaches position X for the
first time. This mode allows to fly low RPM figures in gas mode and higher RPM
figures in governor. Especially F3C pilots should be interested in this mode.
4. Heli mode
Mode 4 is the former heli mode 4 and has been adopted unchanged.
5. Continuous RPM control
In contrast to mode 4 the pilot can choose speed values smaller than 50%. The
governor is active during complete operation.
6. KSA
Identical to former mode 10.

Description of autorotation
The autorotation allows the motor to spool up in a shorter time to higher RPM. This
allows for abrupt interception manoeuvres. The spool up time in autorotation mode is
depended on the set RPM spool up time and is 1/6 of this value. If a general spool up
time of 12 seconds is set, in autorotation mode the spool up time is now 2 seconds.
Autorotation has to be activated via PROGCARD III and Full Speed, Motor-Off and
Brake positions have to be set. The autorotation spool up time is activated if the pilot
moves the throttle from Motor-On position to Motor-Off position. Next spool up will be
with autorotation values. Autorotation is deactivated after 1/3 of the set spool up time.
For a 12 seconds spool up time it means that autorotation is deactivated after 4
seconds motor-off time.

If this quick spool up is not wanted, the throttle has to be in Brake Position.
Autorotation will be deactivated for the next one motor spool up. Due to security
considerations the quick spool up will also be deactivated for the next one spool up, if
the throttle is in Motor-Off position for more than 15 seconds.

KONTRONIK Announces NEW products.

The waiting is over: During this week delivery of the new HELI JIVE 120+HV ESC will start. New heli specific features such as bail-out, manual throttle mode or the option to run the ESC on an external flybarless system have been implemented. Specially designed for F3C applications a new mode combines manual throttle control with the known KONTRONIK governor.

In order to use the HELI JIVE to its full extend a KONTRONIK PROGDISC is necessary. With delivering the new ESC a PROGDISC update (version 1.4) will be available at www.kontronik.com (downloads). The update allows to adjust the different software parameters of the controllers.

Due to increasing demand the PYRO 650 motors will be available with longer shaft as well. The long
shaft version has 40mm free shaft while the standard version has 23.5mm. Additionally, PYRO 700 motors also come in a third shaft version (PYRO 700LS, 30mm). While placing the long shaft motor in the heli it is necessary to use a counter bearing.

Apart from the known KONTRONIK silver connectors KONTRONIK now offers gold connectors as well. With a diameter of 6mm the connectors allow save connections even at high current.

KONTRONIK introduces new products

In the wake of the Nuremberg Toy Fair KONTRONIK presented the news in 2010. The PYRO 600 bridges the gap between the existing engines and PYRO S is designed for 6-8 applications. The two rotation speeds of about 900 and 1100 rpm / V, giving the pilot the opportunity to choose the right engine.

In addition to the engines for the PYRO Helibereich KONTRONIK KORATOP 40 also presented with a new engine for F3A applications. Three different rotation speeds (200, 250, 290 rpm / V) allow the right choice for competition and aerobatics.

As the successor of the Jazz Series presents the new KONTRONIK Koby before speed controller. Functionally, they are modeled on the successful predecessor, however, have a 3 A continuous load BEC. The four versions of the KOBYs come as LV, 40, 55, 70 and 90 A. Of particular interest is the ability to update the new regulators online. If a newer software version available, the controller on the PROGDISC be updated.

The PROGDISC is the latest programming unit for speed controllers. It has a color screen and can connect with both the regulators, as well as with the computer. All parameters of the Speed Controller can be configured. For the control of the latest generation KONTRONIK PROGDISC serves as an interface to the software update. The first online update controller is capable of Koby, all future regulators will also be online updatfähig.

A detailed description of the news and the presentation of the entire KONTRONIK product portfolio can be found in even the current catalog () 6MB download.

KONTRONIK JIVE BEC problems

KONTRONIK received customer feedback about its JIVE ESCs with potential BEC problems. The KONTRONIK JIVE ESCs feature several security settings. One is a protection mechanism that should prevent the internal BEC from being destroyed by back induced voltage. If the JIVE realizes high voltage being back induced (e.g. by servos) it shuts down. Before introducing the JIVE all tests were positive and did not suggest any problems. KONTRONIK strongly recommends to check the set up for back induction and potential BEC shut down before the flight. If the BEC shuts down do not use the maximum available BEC voltage but reduce the BEC voltage using the KONTRONIK ProgCard. KONTRONIK strongly recommends to use an additional receiver battery with sufficient capacity. Also check official specifications about short and constant maximum voltage and current of all components (e.g. servos).

KONTRONIK asks all pilots to support a technical solution by physically sending their set-up (including servos) to US distributor Ready-RC and describing the conditions. KONTRONIK can only reproduce the interdependencies when having all information and conditions available.
